Handmade, painted freehand

Each handmade ceramic mug is shaped, glazed and painted individually in our studio, then kiln-fired. The repeating pattern is painted by hand, so the rhythm of the motifs shifts slightly on every piece — as it does in the hand-drawn manuscripts that inspired it.

Pattern as meditation

Repeating geometric and lace patterns are central to Islamic art precisely because they reward slow looking; there is no focal point, only continuation. On a cup you hold for ten minutes at a time, that's a different experience from a picture printed on the side.
